The Sit Place as described by Gumbaynggirr Elder, writer and poet Aunty Bea Ballangarry is a special place for sharing, connecting and spiritual contemplation
Alison Page, as then Creative Director of The National Aboriginal Design Agency, created a new vision of the Australian lounge room in The Sit Place for the Australian Design Centre’s CUSP: Designing into the Next Decade exhibition.
The everyday objects in the room are designed by Aboriginal artists, Brentyn Lugnan, Jeremy Devitt and Lucy Simpson and contain stories about the land and its people. Visitors to the exhibition were able to listen to original poetry by Aunty Bea Ballangarry AM, a respected Elder and poet from the Gumbaynggirr people of the Mid North Coast of NSW, inspired by the designs. By linking audio with sensors, the room literally ‘speaks to you’ and tells you the story behind the designs.
The exhibition travelled to various venues around Australia in 2014 and 2015.
